The Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa, came alive today with thrilling displays of sportsmanship, unity, and celebration as the Bayelsa State Women’s Sports Party was marked in honor of the 50th birthday of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, MD/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in grand style. The event, powered by Hon. Timi Ziriki, brought together female athletes, dignitaries, and sports enthusiasts from across the state.
FOOTBALL MATCH
'SHOWDOWN OF SKILL AND TEAM SPIRIT'
The centerpiece of the day’s activities was a pulsating mini football tournament with four teams contesting for the trophy.
The first encounter featured Ezougha Academy (blue kits) and the Bayelsa Stars (black and yellow kits). From the first whistle, both teams impressed with their tactical discipline, precise passing, and sheer determination. Spectators witnessed remarkable saves, bold dribbles, and near-goal moments that kept the stadium on edge.
Ezougha Academy emerged victorious with a narrow 1–0 win, securing their place in the finals. They faced Seaside Amazon, who qualified for the final through a tense penalty shootout after a goalless draw against the Bayelsa Queens Feeders.
The final was filled with suspense and breathtaking moments, as Seaside Amazon clinched the trophy with a 1–0 victory over Ezougha Academy.
TUG OF FRIENDSHIP, RAW STRENGTH AND UNITY
The Tug of friendship segment ignited the crowd as teams battled fiercely for supremacy. Competitors dug deep, using grit, technique, and synchronized pulling to outmuscle their opponents. The final pull drew thunderous applause as the winners, SILGA SISTERS celebrated in a joyful heap on the grass.
SACK RACE,
LAUGHTER AND AGILITY
Adding a touch of fun and nostalgia, the Sack Race saw participants hopping energetically towards the finish line. Some stumbled and rolled, drawing laughter from the stands, while others powered through to victory, earning warm applause from the audience.
A CELEBRATION BEYOND SPORTS
Speaking at the event, Hon. Timi Ziriki emphasized that the celebration was not only to honour the sporting talents of Bayelsa women but also to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku at 50.
