As Nigeria marked 65 years of independence, the headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oporoza, pulsed with energy, colour, and youthful enthusiasm. The 2025 edition of the Pere of Gbaramatu (Aketekpe) Sports Event, organized by the National Association of Gbaramatu Students (NAGS), transformed the town into a lively stage where athleticism, culture, and community spirit converged in celebration of the nation’s independence.

Six houses – Fiyewei, Akpata, Ebiabu, Ogeh, Oboro, and Etibo – brought their best to the field. The day featured relay races, sprints, and long-distance competitions, alongside a history debate that challenged minds as much as the track tested endurance. The highlight for many was the March Past, where precision, discipline, and creativity combined to captivate the cheering crowd.

Spectators filled the grounds, waving flags and chanting for their favourite houses. Dignitaries, community leaders, and families all came together, drawn not only by competition but by a shared sense of pride in the kingdom and the nation. Every cheer, clap, and shout reflected more than school spirit – it echoed the hope and resilience of a community celebrating its youth and heritage on Independence Day.

After a day of intense competition, Fiyewei House emerged as the overall champion with 1,046 points, demonstrating consistent excellence across events and dominating the March Past. Akpata House followed in second place with 537 points, while Ebiabu House secured third with 260 points. Ogeh, Oboro, and Etibo Houses completed the rankings with 236, 205, and 130 points, respectively.

Cash prizes and medals were presented to the top performers. Fiyewei House received ₦500,000, Akpata House was awarded ₦300,000, and Ebiabu House went home with ₦200,000, each accompanied by commemorative medals.

Leaders of NAGS praised the participants for their unity, discipline, and sportsmanship, emphasizing that the Aketekpe Sports Event goes beyond medals and trophies. It serves as a platform for talent discovery, fostering peace, and strengthening community bonds, providing young people a stage to shine while honoring their roots and country.

The competitive spirit was matched by the excitement of the crowd and the joy of camaraderie. As the sun set over Oporoza, the streets continued to hum with celebration, a reminder that independence is not only about history but also about building a united, hopeful, and thriving future.

The 2025 Pere of Gbaramatu (Aketekpe) Sports Event demonstrated that on Independence Day, sport and culture can unite a community, inspire its youth, and celebrate the essence of Nigeria @ 65.
