OPEN LETTER TO RT. HON. SHERIFF OBOREVWORI, EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE

Post by Abigail pereowei »

Your Excellency,

When will Warri and Uvwie be freed from this drainage nightmare?

We write with urgency, frustration, and the weight of public disappointment.

In 2019, your predecessor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, made a bold declaration to tackle the flooding problem in Warri and Uvwie.

He said: “The state government would spend ₦18 billion to construct six stormwater drainage projects to solve flooding problems in Warri and Uvwie areas of the state.”

It was a promise welcomed with hope. He later added: “If I put ₦20 billion on roads in Warri, people will shout and clap for me everywhere. However, after a year, those roads will all be gone. Therefore, I would rather lay the foundation and allow other governments to build on it.”

Most importantly, the state government also promised in 2021 that by 2022, the drainage projects would be completed and the flooding challenges permanently addressed.

Today, six years later, and two years into your own administration, what we have is not a foundation but a full-blown disaster.

Warri and Uvwie remain in ruins.

Drainage systems are incomplete. Roads are dug up and abandoned. Flooding is worse. And hope is quickly fading.

Airport Road, once a commercial heartbeat of Warri, is now a ghost corridor of blocked access and dying businesses. No signs. No diversions. No timelines. Just disruption and silence.

Shops are losing customers. Commercial drivers are stranded. Pedestrians are at risk. Entire neighborhoods have turned into construction zones with no end in sight.

This is not just a failure of infrastructure. It is a failure of leadership, accountability, and respect for the people who trusted the government.

At this point, GbaramatuVoice, on behalf of affected communities and businesses, respectfully demands clarity on the following: Where is the ₦18 billion? Who are the contractors responsible for this disgrace? Why is there no consistent communication to the public? When will Warri and Uvwie be free from this endless mess?

This is no longer about past administrations. This is your government now. And silence is no longer an option.

Your Excellency, the people are watching. History is recording. And accountability is inevitable, whether now or later.

With sincerity and urgency,

Signed:
