Agadagbabou

Post by Abigail pereowei »

According to Ijo oral accounts documented by Alagoa, Agadagbabou is portrayed as an ancient community or region where the Ijo people, or their ancestors, resided before migrating to their current locations.

Agadagbabou is an early settlement or point of origin for some Ijo groups, particularly those in the Central and Western Niger Delta. While its exact location and historical status remain debated, it is often described as a foundational site from which Ijo communities dispersed to establish city-states like Nembe, Brass, Bonny, and Okrika.

Oral traditions suggest that around 500 CE (based on genealogical estimates), Ijo groups moved from Agadagbabou due to environmental pressures, population growth, or conflicts. These migrations led to the founding of settlements across the Delta’s riverine environment. For example, the ancestors of the Nembe and Brass Ijo are said to have originated from Agadagbabou or nearby areas before establishing their city-states.

Agadagbabou is not definitively mapped, as oral histories prioritize symbolic over precise geographical details. Some scholars suggest it may lie in the Central Delta, possibly near present-day Bayelsa State, based on linguistic and cultural connections to Ijo subgroups.

Who can find something to add to this history 🤔
