FLOOD ALERT: COMMUNITIES ALONG BANKS OF RIVERS NIGER AND KADUNA URGED TO MOVE TO SAFER GROUNDS – NSEMA

Post by Abigail pereowei »

The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency has advised communities along Rivers Niger and Kaduna to relocate to safer grounds already identified.

The Agency’s warning follows the discharge of water from the Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jebba hydro dams located in Niger State.

In a statement, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, noted that the dams are releasing thousands of gallons of water per minute, which could cause the rivers to overflow their banks.

He therefore urged communities along the two rivers to limit activities around those areas during this period to avoid being caught up in floods.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) also predicted that the end of the rainy season will be accompanied by violent windstorms. It advised residents to avoid standing under trees during rainfall and to stay away from substandard structures.

Niger State is already experiencing the negative impact of flooding, with houses, farmlands, bridges, and access roads in some local government areas washed away. The disaster has rendered many people homeless, disrupted socio-economic activities, and led to loss of lives.
